The Rotsteinpass Berggasthaus is near the Säntis Peak on the Alpstein massif and in the Appenzeller Region. When “Alp Hopping,” hiking from Berggasthaus to Berggasthaus, trying the local dishes at each location is a specialty. All the Alp Houses on the Alpstein massif are going to be serving Appenzeller cheese. Farm fresh eggs are also a treat.

Many of the Alpine trails in Switzerland pass along farms, restaurants, and guest houses. The formal Berggasthaus, mountain restaurants, and mountain inns also known as Alp Houses are usually open for business serving traditional and local dishes.
Look for the Swiss flag flying proudly and that’s a sure sign the Alp House is open.
The Rotsteinpass Berggasthaus website, https://www.rotsteinpass.ch, says, “The mountain restaurant Rotsteinpass is the ideal destination for numerous hikes as well as a rest stop for snacks. Enjoy the wonderful landscape of the Alpstein on a hike, rest in the mountain restaurant Rotsteinpass and recharge your batteries for your next route.
The path from the Rotsteinpass over the Lisengrat to the summit of the Säntis makes every hiker’s heart beat faster. The trail is secured in the rocks with wire ropes and requires good mountaineering boots, sure-footedness and a head for heights. Children should be secured.”

Säntis Malt WhiskyTrek
As a promotion, the Appenzeller brewery and the owner of the MäglisAlp house created the Säntis Malt WhiskyTrek throughout the region. All the Alp houses purchased, stored, and bottled their own cask of single malt whisky, each cast with a different finish (Port, Sherry, Cognac, Merlot, Pinot-noir, etc). Maps and pre-paid vouchers were created and people can hike various portions of the Appenzeller WhiskyTrek collecting the different bottles, 27 in all. This is the Rotsteinpass version.
