Meglisalp Berggasthaus

“A special piece of earth where magic lives.” The Meglisalp Berggasthaus offers a unique experience with an alpine campus including their restaurant, guest house, cabins, a chapel and whiskey cellar. Built in 1861, the Meglisalp Berggasthaus goes back in history to at least 1071 when it was first mentioned in a letter to the abby of St. Gallen.

Appenzell Innerrhoden – Säntis Hike

Säntis – Lisengrat – Rotsteinpass (1 Std. 15 Min) Challenging. Rotsteinpass – Meglisalp – Seealpsee – Wasserauen (3 Std. 30 Min) Challenging

As one of the originators of the Säntis Malt WhiskyTrek we had to try their special single malt.

The Meglisalp plateau can be seen from many different vantage points with its central mountain location. I enjoy a hike with destination breaks. Although it took us far longer than the guides suggested, I think it was worth the time spent at each of the Alp Houses we visited.

Meglisalp Legend

Read the legend of Meglisalp at the website https://www.meglisalp.ch. It’s a classic European moral about terrible consequences befalling bad behavior and ‘happily ever after’ rewards for good behavior.

“Meggelin, however, expanded his hospitable hut and vowed to be an attentive host to all visitors to his alp. The dwarfs’ magic is still working today. Meggelis Alp, which today is called Meglisalp, still receives enough water despite the dry lake and spooky spring stream, even if there is not a drop of rain for weeks.”
