John Muir Way, Scotland, Day 8

Hiking the John Muir Way: From Bar Hill to the West Highland Campground

Join me on an unforgettable journey as we explore a remarkable stretch of the John Muir Way. Our adventure begins at Bar Hill, a site rich with history and natural beauty. This scenic hike promises breathtaking views, historic Roman forts, and charming Scottish towns, leading us through a mix of tranquil countryside and cultural landmarks.

We kick off the hike with a peaceful morning at Bar Hill, where the rolling hills stretch as far as the eye can see. The views from Bar Hill are nothing short of captivating, with the distant skyline of Glasgow peeking through the horizon, adding a touch of urban contrast to the surrounding wilderness. From this vantage point, the landscape reveals itself in layers—hills, fields, and forests all blending into one seamless panorama.

Watch my introduction and Bar Hill exploration:

As I continue along the trail, we reach the Bar Hill Fort, an important relic from Scotland’s Roman past. This site is part of the Antonine Wall, a frontier of the Roman Empire. Walking through the ruins of the fort, it’s easy to imagine the Roman soldiers who once stood here, keeping watch over the vast Scottish landscape. The fort is a key part of what makes the John Muir Way so unique—it’s not just a hiking trail, but a journey through history.

After leaving Bar Hill, we head toward the charming town of Kirkintilloch. The town’s welcoming atmosphere and quiet streets provide a pleasant contrast to the rugged hills we’ve traversed. From here, we continue through the lush greenery of Milton of Campsie, a peaceful village tucked between the hills, offering a glimpse of everyday Scottish life. The scenery shifts to a more rural feel, with rolling fields and distant hills forming the backdrop as we hike along.

Experience the peaceful walk through Kirkintilloch and Milton of Campsie:

One of the most exciting parts of today’s hike is the energetic ascent along the Campsies. Known for their rugged beauty, these hills offer a more challenging but deeply rewarding experience. The crackling energy of the trail makes the hike feel alive, with every step bringing new perspectives and a deeper connection to the land. Along the way, I encounter the Strathblane Railway Path, which provides a unique and peaceful route through the countryside.

We soon reach Dunglas Hill, a standout highlight of the day’s journey. This hill offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, providing a perfect place to pause and take in the natural beauty before continuing on to the towns of Strathblane and Blanefield. These picturesque towns feel like something out of a storybook, with their quaint buildings and peaceful atmosphere.

The hike ends at the West Highland Campground, a serene spot nestled at the gateway to the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking, with views that make you feel like you’ve truly arrived in the heart of Scotland’s wilderness. The campground serves both John Muir Way and West Highland Way hikers, offering a peaceful haven after a day’s adventure.

Watch my final steps into the West Highland Campground:
