John Muir Way, Scotland, Day 5

Exploring the Scottish Wilderness: From South Queensferry to Kinneil Estate

Set out with me on a captivating journey through some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes. Our adventure begins in South Queensferry, beneath the awe-inspiring bridges that define the region. The Queensferry Crossing Bridge towers overhead as we embark on a hike full of history, nature, and unexpected encounters.

As the sun peeks through the clouds, I walk under the Queensferry Crossing and lay out our plan for the day. The first leg of our journey takes us to Hopetoun House, an estate that speaks of Scotland’s stately past, surrounded by vast gardens and woodlands. Although my path meanders a bit off course, I soon find myself in a charming hamlet that is well worth the detour.

Watch the start of the journey here:

Leaving Hopetoun House behind, the trail opens up to reveal sprawling country estates. The views of these grand properties, with their meticulously landscaped grounds, pull you back in time. My fascination with the scenery takes me slightly off track, but before long, I find myself on the right path once again. Even in these quiet moments, there’s a profound sense of discovery.

As I approach the Firth of Forth, the landscape changes. The tide is low, revealing wide stretches of beach that glisten in the soft light. The highlight of this part of the hike is Blackness Castle. This medieval fortress, famously known as “the ship that never sailed,” holds a wealth of history. From its time as a royal stronghold to a military garrison, its stone walls have many stories to tell. Walking along the coast toward the castle, I soak in the view of the Highlands in the distance.

Experience Blackness Castle and the beach walk:

Next, I follow the coastline into the quaint town of Bo’ness. Here, the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway steam engine offers a delightful glimpse into Scotland’s industrial past. The sound of the engine rolling through the town evokes a nostalgic charm, and I can’t help but smile as it chugs by. The moment brings a unique sense of connection between the past and present, an ideal pause before we move on.

The final stretch of the hike takes us away from the Firth of Forth to the Kinneil Estate. This peaceful estate is where the ancient Antonine Wall, marking the northern boundary of the Roman Empire, meets the natural beauty of the Scottish countryside. Walking through Kinneil Estate is a serene experience, with trees swaying in the breeze and remnants of history scattered throughout the landscape. It’s a fitting conclusion to a journey that’s rich with exploration and discovery.

Explore the tranquil Kinneil Estate:

This hike, full of diverse landscapes, historical landmarks, and peaceful moments, captures the spirit of adventure and the beauty of Scotland’s wilderness. Each step along the Firth of Forth, each glance at the iconic bridges, and every unexpected encounter adds depth to the experience, making it an unforgettable journey.
