I start day 5 with some altitude effects and I end day 5 with a mountain rainstorm. It was all worth it for my final hike out to Kenosha Pass on Day 6.
I camped at 11,000ft last night and the altitude has its effect on me in the morning. I may have filtered my water backward, take a look at the filter and see if you can determine what I did.

I spent a lot of mental energy before the hike thinking about how to make a temporary rain shelter. My experience with Colorado mountain rain is that it downpours. These downpours are local and short but powerful, rendering rain gear and pack covers worthless. So, in this episode, I practice making a shelter. Section 5 gets exciting with the mountain vistas. South Park, snow cap mountains, and dramatic clouds highlight this video. When you hike the CT, you need to spend a few days getting up to altitude. Section 5 feels like you are really hiking toward the rooftop of the world. I could hike this section over and over again, season after season.

The day before my solo-hike begins, I travel to Kenosha Pass to park my car. My trail host, Rick, accompanies me on the journey and we take an extended look at the Kenosha Pass Trailhead and Campgrounds. All these videos are 360° and available in 4K. Please use the 360° controls on the upper left of your screen and change your settings to request the 4k version – it makes a big difference for details like flowers.
Kenosha Pass has a 10,000 ft elevation, a large parking area, reservation campgrounds, and a pit toilet. The Aspen Tree viewing from this location is excellent and in autumn it’s very busy. Walking east on the Colorado Trail (1776) for a mile+ from Kenosha Pass will get you deep into Aspen Groves and Alpine flowers.
